Electrocardiograph technicians (EKG) administer EKG tests on patients under the direct supervision of a physician. These tests follow electrical impulses transmitted by the heart, producing a print-out reading that the physician can then use for analysis and diagnosis. Most EKG techs have a high school diploma and certificate training. A typical EKG training program will last between eight to sixteen weeks. There are varying levels of emergency medical technician, all of which require registration and certification. Health informatics is now vital to healthcare delivery and medical information technicians are enjoying one of the fastest growing occupations in the US today. The recording of a patient’s treatment is vital for billing, insurance and legal coverage. This is the role of the medical information technician. While you can learn a lot about medical information on the job, most medical information technicians are trained to at least associate’s level. Courses covered include computer databases, anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, legal aspects, coding and statistics, database management, quality improvement methods, and computer science. You prepare to become a medical information technician at high school by choosing subjects such as biology and computer science.

In today’s hospitals and extended care facilities a nurse assistant is an important part of a health care team that includes many personnel outside of nurses. Nurse assistants are needed to provide routine care so that nurses can provide care that only they can perform, as outlined by each state’s Nurse Practice Acts, such as formulating care plans, nursing assessments, administering medication, and assisting in surgery room preparation. The nurse assistant must not only be very skilled in the actual procedures being performed but must also be able to observe a patient’s condition and report that information back to the nurse. Due to other responsibilities, the nurse cannot spend large amounts of time in the room with the patient so the nurse assistant is often referred to as the nurse’s “eyes and ears”.
